Rubric for arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
A (90-100%) Exceed Expectation
Claims are insightful, engaging, clear, supportable and debatable; effective organization establishes/presents relationships among counterclaims, reasoning and evidence
Claims and counterclaims are fairly considered and well-developed with convincing evidence while effectively anticipating audience knowledge and concerns
Formal style and objective tone are consistently maintained to effectively establish credibility throughout the writing; follows standard English language conventions (in general minimal errors in grammar, spelling or punctuation)
B (80-89%) Meets Expectation
Claims are clear, supportable and debatable; effective organization establishes/presents relationships among counterclaims, reasoning and evidence
Claims and counterclaims are considered and developed with sufficient evidence while anticipating audience knowledge and concerns
Formal style and objective tone are maintained throughout writing; follows standard English language conventions (in general few errors in grammar, spelling or punctuation)
C (70-79%) Needs Improvement
Claims are identifiable; some organization is effective and attempts to establish relationships among counterclaims, reasoning and evidence
Claims and counterclaims may not be fully developed and/or may not be supported with sufficient evidence; limited evidence of consideration of audience
Formal style and objective tone are not maintained consistently throughout the writing; noticeable errors in standard English language conventions (In general noticeable errors in grammar, spelling or punctuation)
D (60-69%) Warning
Claims are unclear or not identifiable; organization is ineffective and does not establish connections between/relationships among counterclaims, reasoning and evidence
Claims and counterclaims are not developed and not supported; limited evidence of consideration of audience
Does not maintain formal style and objective tone; errors in standard English language conventions impede understanding
